What DPI Should I Use for Gaming and Work?

By The DPI Analyzer team at 1000 Ventures Last reviewed

For most people, 800 to 1,600 DPI is the right range. For games, the exact DPI matters much less than you think, because the in-game sensitivity scales it. Pick a DPI in that range, then tune your sensitivity until aiming feels right.

Short answer by use

What you doGood starting DPIWhy
Tactical shooters (CS2, Valorant)400 or 800Low sensitivity setups, with the fine control coming from the arm.
Fast shooters (Apex, Overwatch 2)800 or 1,600More tracking, often a little faster than tactical shooters.
MOBAs and strategy1,200 to 1,600The cursor crosses the screen often, so faster is handy.
Office work at 1080p or 1440p800 to 1,600Across the screen in about 1.2 to 3.2 inches of movement.
4K or several monitors1,600 to 3,200Thousands of pixels to cover without lifting the mouse.

These are starting points, not rules. Your arm, your desk and your pad all play a part.

Does DPI matter in games?

Less than the box suggests. In a game, what you feel is DPI times sensitivity, called eDPI. 400 DPI at sensitivity 2 and 800 DPI at sensitivity 1 turn the camera exactly the same distance per inch.

So the real decision is how far you want to move the mouse to turn around. That distance, cm per 360, is the number to choose and keep. DPI is just one of the two knobs that set it.

Is higher DPI better?

Not by itself. A higher DPI means the sensor reports more counts per inch. That can help in two ways: the cursor moves in finer steps, and you can use a lower in-game sensitivity, which some games handle more smoothly. But past a point there is no visible gain, and a few sensors get less clean at the very top of their range. Modern gaming sensors are designed to track well across the usual 400 to 3,200 range.

A practical rule: if you find yourself setting the in-game sensitivity very low to make up for a huge DPI, the DPI is higher than you need.

Is 800 or 1600 DPI better for gaming?

Both are fine. Choose 1600 if you like a slightly finer cursor on the desktop, or if your game's menus feel slow at 800. Choose 800 if you are copying a setup from someone who uses it and want the same sensitivity numbers. Then set the in-game sensitivity so the eDPI matches what you want.

If you switch from 800 to 1600, halve the in-game sensitivity to keep the same aim. The sensitivity converter does this for you, including between different games.

What DPI do pro players use?

Many pro shooter players use 400, 800 or 1600 DPI with a low in-game sensitivity. That is a habit, not a secret. What they share is a slow cm per 360 and a large mouse pad, not one magic DPI. Copy their eDPI if you like, then adjust in 10 percent steps until it suits your arm.

What DPI for a 4K monitor?

For desktop work, 1600 to 3200 DPI suits a 4K screen. With Windows pointer speed at the middle setting and Enhance pointer precision off, one count moves the cursor one pixel. So crossing 3,840 pixels takes 2.4 inches of movement at 1600 DPI, and 1.2 inches at 3200. At 800 DPI it would take 4.8 inches, which often means lifting the mouse.

You can also raise the Windows pointer speed instead of the DPI, but above the middle setting Windows starts skipping pixels. Raising DPI is the cleaner fix.

How to settle on your DPI in 10 minutes

  1. Measure your current DPI, so you start from the real number.
  2. Pick a DPI from the table above and set it in your mouse software.
  3. Set Windows pointer speed to the middle and turn off Enhance pointer precision.
  4. In your main game, adjust sensitivity until a full turn takes a distance that feels controllable. Note your cm per 360 in the eDPI calculator.
  5. Use the converter to carry that cm per 360 to your other games.

DPI is not the only number on the box

Polling rate, in Hz, is how often the mouse reports. It does not change how far you turn, but it changes how smooth and fresh movement is. Check yours with the polling rate test.

Frequently asked questions

Is 800 or 1600 DPI better for gaming?
Neither is better on its own, because the game sensitivity scales it. 800 DPI at sensitivity 2 turns the camera the same as 1600 DPI at sensitivity 1.
Is higher DPI better?
No. Higher DPI only means more counts per inch. Past a point you just lower the sensitivity to make up for it, and some sensors smooth or jitter at the very top of their range.
What DPI do pro players use?
Many pro shooter players use 400, 800 or 1600 DPI with a low in-game sensitivity. Compare setups with eDPI, not DPI alone.
What DPI is best for a 4K monitor?
For desktop work, 1600 to 3200 DPI suits a 4K screen. With Windows pointer speed at 10 of 20 and Enhance pointer precision off, crossing 3,840 pixels then takes 2.4 or 1.2 inches of movement.
